People with disabilities will live in more inclusive and accessible communities as part of the NSW government’s plan to remove systemic and behavioral barriers to participation in society.
Families, Communities and Disability Services Minister Alister Henskens said the NSW Disability Inclusion Plan 2021-2025 strengthens the state’s accessibility framework and describes work underway to improve outcomes for people with disabilities.
“NSW is the national leader in disability support – we were the first state to implement a disability inclusion plan and led the country in the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) “said Mr. Henskens.
“This four-year plan builds on the work our government has undertaken to create more accessible and inclusive communities, and provides a plan to increase the social and economic participation of people with disabilities across New South Wales.”
As part of the NSW Disability Inclusion Plan, all public sector agencies and local councils are required to develop action plans to foster positive change in their communities.
The main deliverables of the Disability Inclusion Plan 2021-2025 include:
- Improve services for people with disabilities through More jobs More care;
- Implement the NSW Education Disability Strategy;
- Increase the availability and accessibility of transportation options for people with disabilities, including those living in regional and rural areas; and
- Continue to build more inclusive play areas according to Anyone can play principles.
These initiatives are examples of the work being done by our government agencies and local councils to create more inclusive communities, improving access to services and removing barriers to participation in society, âsaid Henskens.
Projects under the previous Disability Inclusion Plan include accessible stations along the Sydney Underground, elevator upgrades on TAFE campuses, and the TV series Employable Me, which promoted employment paths for disabled people.
