One year after the successful launch of “Color Esperanza 2020”, Diego Torres, Kany García, Leslie Grace, Thalía and Carlos Vives will use their social platforms to engage with communities in the Americas by sharing educational messages of hope, good -being and health to the prevention of the SARS-CoV-2 virus
Washington, DC, June 15, 2021 (OPS) – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) continues a collaborative effort with artists from Global Citizen and Sony Music Latin on campaigns to inform and educate people in the Americas on the spread of COVID-19.
“Color Esperanza 2021: Protect Yourself and Others,” features 5 Latin artists who have come forward to help share messages about preventing the spread of coronavirus through their social media using the lyrics from the song “Color Esperanza “.
These artists include Diego Torres – who co-wrote and performed the song, which translates into English as “Color of Hope” – as well as Kany García, Leslie Grace, Thalía and Carlos Vives. Together, they will help spread messages of hope, wellness and health, specifically for young people in the Americas, to stand in the way of COVID-19.
“Even with the deployment of vaccines in our region, we must maintain public health measures to limit exposure to this virus,” PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne said. “Social distancing, limiting gatherings and consistently using masks in public places and frequent hand washing are our absolute best hopes for reducing the number of COVID-19 infections right now.”
The 2021 campaign prioritizes prevention – wearing a mask, social distancing, hand washing and staying home – and will address important mental health issues related to the virus. The Americas recently surpassed 1.6 million deaths from COVID-19 – over 1 million in Latin America and the Caribbean – and over 67.6 million confirmed cases.
Originally launched in May 2020, the initiative also envisions the donation of all royalties collected by the record company from the track “Color Esperanza”, in perpetuity, to support PAHO’s response to the pandemic. The organization’s response activities include the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE), COVID-19 tests and intensive care equipment for countries including Belize, Bolivia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Suriname.
In March this year, PAHO delivered life-saving PPE to 36 countries, including 6.2 million gloves, 2.1 million gowns, 40 million surgical and respiratory masks, 371,000 goggles, and more than 24 million COVID-19 test kits. “Color Esperanza 2020” has contributed to these efforts.
