WAYNE, Pa. (WPVI) – For the owners of Cornerstone Bistro in Wayne, Pa., The decision to require proof of the COVID-19 vaccine to dine inside has led to hateful emails and criticism.

“It’s disturbing to say the least,” said Christine Kondra, co-owner of the business with her husband Nick.

“The last thing we want to do is see what happened a year ago; we can’t start shutting down again,” she added.

The restaurant’s decision to require proof of a vaccine comes as the delta variant continues to fuel an increase in COVID-19 cases, health experts say.

Diners who cannot show proof of a vaccine are still allowed to eat and drink outside. But not everyone is happy.

“We got emails, hate emails. We got negative reviews on Yelp, Google. We got lots of anti-Semitic remarks. We got people saying they can’t wait to celebrate the closure of our restaurant, they’re going to have a party when we close, ”recalled Christine Kondra.

“It’s really sad to hear. They’re trying to keep their employees safe, they’re trying to keep our community safe, and the backlash has been terrible,” said Ben Fileccia of the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association. .

Nick Kondra for his part says that this is not some kind of political statement.

“If we have COVID in the building, we have to shut down for two weeks, there is no ifs or buts about it. Then, the next two weeks, 20 people will not be able to pay their rent or their rent. car insurance or their health insurance – that doesn’t make sense to me, ”he said.

But not all reaction to the vaccine requirement has been negative.

“There are amazing people calling from across the country to buy gift certificates. We have sold thousands of dollars in gift certificates, ”said Christine Kondra.

The Kondras say there’s no chance they’ll change their mind despite the negative backlash.

The vaccination policy goes into effect at Cornerstone Bistro on August 4th.
