“As an African American woman with a thriving business, I am the change I wish to see,” said Pinky Cole, Founder and CEO of Slutty Vegan.

ATLANTA – Two popular Atlanta-area restaurants are teaming up to offer free life insurance policies to thousands of local black men.

Between their basic products and their flawless charm, Slutty Vegan and Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks reign supreme on the Atlanta culinary scene.

“As an African American woman with a thriving business, I am the change I wish to see,” said Pinky Cole, Founder and CEO of Slutty Vegan.

Cole’s journey to building the ever popular Slutty Vegan Empire hasn’t been easy. She said adversity became her motivation.

“My mom was a single mom, she had five jobs. My father was sentenced to life in prison and served 22 years, ”Cole said. “I have been through so much in my life and realized that the people around me would lose loved ones and no one had life insurance. And because they didn’t have life insurance, we ended up having fish fries, fundraisers, and barbecues to pay for the funeral.

Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks Founder and CEO Derrick Hayes had similar experiences growing up.

He named Big Dave’s after his late father, one of the many loved ones he lost too soon.

“I come from a very dangerous city, Philadelphia,” said Hayes. “I actually just lost a cousin a few days ago. I just want people to understand that life insurance is really important, so that we don’t leave the burden on our loved ones.”

Hayes and Cole have teamed up to launch Square 1: The Liife Experience to offer free life insurance policies to local black men who earn $ 30,000 a year or less.

“Especially in Atlanta, the number of black men who die every day is alarming,” Cole said. “Knowing that the life insurance rate is lower in the African American community and the death rate is higher shows that there is a, there is a problem. We are the solution.

Men can choose their own policies and beneficiaries.

“There are no hidden intentions,” said Hayes. “We don’t make money with it.”

Cole and Hayes say their goal is to cover 25,000 Atlanta-area men by 2023.

It’s a way they choose to give back to the city that has given them so much.

“If we can have an impact on at least a person’s life, then we’ve done our job,” Cole said.
